A roleplay platform is not a companion app
Two kinds of app get called AI roleplay. Character platforms such as Character.AI, Janitor AI, SpicyChat, CrushOn, PolyBuzz, Talkie and Chai are built around a public library: you browse, pick a character or a scenario, and move on to the next one whenever you like. Chai alone counts more than 25 million user-created characters. Companion apps such as Kindroid and Nomi are built around one character you design and keep, with memory systems meant to carry a relationship over months.
This list covers the first kind. If what you want is a single partner who remembers you, the companion apps document more of what that takes, and our memory list ranks them. If you want variety, fandom characters, group scenes and stories that start fresh, a character platform is the better tool.
The content rules decide which app fits
Three of the seven keep sexual content out entirely. Character.AI's community guidelines prohibit pornographic content and nudity, and users under 18 no longer get open-ended chat at all; they are moved to Stories, a structured choose-your-path format. Talkie's guidelines go further than most and prohibit suggestive or implied sexual content as well as explicit material. PolyBuzz's terms ban sexual content too, and limit the app to users 18 and over.
The other four allow adult text for adults. Janitor AI permits adult content between consenting adult characters and has a zero-tolerance rule on anything involving minors. SpicyChat describes itself as uncensored roleplay for adults and requires explicit characters to be marked NSFW. CrushOn sells itself on a No Filter pitch. Chai's terms say its models allow expansive, user-driven roleplay that can include adult themes, and it offers optional safety filters for people who want them; its Safety Center adds that its models are designed to refuse sexually explicit content.
Images follow stricter rules than text on all four. Janitor AI bans explicit avatars, SpicyChat bans photorealistic nudity, CrushOn tells creators to avoid explicit sexual activity in character images, and Chai prohibits sexually explicit images and video of any kind.
Memory: how long a story holds together
Long roleplay fails in a familiar way: the model forgets who a side character was, or what happened three scenes ago. On a character platform, memory mostly means context, the amount of recent chat the model can see, measured in tokens. The platforms publish very different numbers.
Janitor AI's free model sees around 9,000 tokens, and janitor+ gives five times that. SpicyChat's free tier sees 4,096 tokens and its top plan up to 32,768, with an editable Memory Manager for pinning facts. CrushOn's free models have 8K memory and paid tiers reach 16K and 24K; free chat history is deleted after seven days of inactivity. Character.AI adds written Story Memory, a Lorebook and pinned messages, with 15 pins free and 30 on its paid plans.
PolyBuzz and Talkie say plainly in their FAQs that memory is technically limited and older conversation will be forgotten. PolyBuzz's paid memberships add longer memory and, on the top plan, a Permanent Memory feature; Talkie lists Chat Memory among its Talkie+ benefits.
What free gets you
Roleplay is one of the few corners of this category where a free tier can carry real use. Character.AI allows unlimited chats with ads and slow mode, and says the free plan stays as it is; the company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 to sell itself, and the app stays open while the sale runs. Janitor AI allows unlimited chats on its own model, JLLM, and janitor+, its only paid plan, mainly buys more context. CrushOn gives unlimited use of its free models plus 100 message credits a month for the better ones.
The rest cap something. SpicyChat's free tier is ad-supported, limits replies to 180 tokens and allows three saved personas. Talkie sets a daily chat limit that Talkie+ removes, along with ads and a daily cap on images. PolyBuzz is free with ads and meters voice chat time, which coins can extend. The comparison table rates every free tier on one scale, and each app's pricing page lists the exact limits and paid plans.
Voice, images and which phone you use
If a scene should talk back, the mainstream apps lead. Character.AI offers voice calls, group chats and images inside the chat. Talkie has voice calls and image generation, and PolyBuzz has character voices and image generation. Chai gives each character its own voice. Among the adult platforms, CrushOn sends voice messages but does not generate images, SpicyChat reads messages aloud only on its top plan, and Janitor AI is text only for now, with voice and images named as future plans.
Phones are where names and rules change. SpicyChat has no iOS app; it runs in the browser or as an Android app downloaded from its own site. CrushOn's store apps carry other names, Crushmash on iOS and JollyChatter on Android. Talkie's US iPhone app is published as Talkie Lab. PolyBuzz left the App Store on October 15, 2026 and Chai on October 22, 2026; both still run on Android and the web, and copies already installed on iPhones keep working. Janitor AI filters its mobile app more tightly than its website to stay within Apple and Google's rules.
Your stories are data
Roleplay logs are long and personal, and most of these platforms keep the right to learn from them. CrushOn's privacy policy says chat content is used for training its models. Chai says messages may be used to improve the chatbot for all users. Character.AI's policy lists training its AI models among the uses of your data, and Talkie's says your companion learns from your interactions. SpicyChat's terms reserve the right to use, sell and license the content generated in chats. Janitor AI and PolyBuzz say they do not sell personal data, and neither states clearly whether chats train models.
None of that makes the apps unusable, but it is a reason to keep real names, addresses and photos of real people out of your stories. Each app's safety page quotes its policy in full.

We took every app we track whose core product is a public character library and kept those with sign-ups open in the US and prices, free tiers and content rules we could source and date. Companion apps built around one character were left for other lists. Store ratings set the order, since they are the one score the apps cannot write for themselves; our rubric score, calculated from published facts only, sits in the table. Affiliate payouts have no effect on the order.
