When to stay with Character AI

you want filtered roleplay with the largest library of characters, voice calls and group chats, and you are happy with a free tier that has ads. Free chat is still unlimited, new chats start on PipSqueak 3, the default style since September 28, and c.ai lite now makes the paid step smaller. Nothing else matches its scale.

Why people look for alternatives

Most people leave Character AI for one of four reasons: the filter stops romantic or dark scenes, memory drops details in long stories, ads and slow mode interrupt the free tier, or, since late 2025, age checks and the end of open-ended chat for under-18s. Each alternative on this page fixes one or two of those, never all four.

Decide which one matters to you first. A roleplayer frustrated by the filter wants a different app from someone who wants a companion that remembers their week.

If the filter is the problem

Janitor AI, SpicyChat and Chai are the character platforms that allow adult content for adults, each under its own written policy. Janitor AI has the most generous free tier and lets you bring your own model; SpicyChat has the most developed memory tools; Chai is built for the phone. All three still ban content involving minors, and none of them is open to under-18s.

If memory is the problem

Kindroid and Nomi approach the problem from the other side: instead of thousands of characters, one or a few companions with memory systems built to keep details for months. Both document how that memory works, both offer voice, and both allow adult content. They suit people who used Character AI for one favourite character more than for stories.

If the trouble is a long story losing track of itself, try Character AI's new default first. PipSqueak 3, free since September 28, is described by Character AI as keeping better track of a chat, and new chats start on it, while existing chats keep the style they began with. Of the two companions, only Nomi can still be tried free for as long as you like: Kindroid ended its free Lite model on October 1 and now offers a short preview, then a trial that needs a payment method.

If ads and slow mode are the problem

Before switching, check whether c.ai lite solves it. It costs about half of c.ai+ and, by Character AI's September 28 announcement, removes banner ads, shows fewer interstitial ads and brings less slow mode when the service is busy; only c.ai+ removes ads completely. If you would rather not pay at all, Janitor AI's free tier gives unlimited chats on its standard models with no message cap, though its context window is far smaller than on janitor+. Chai is no longer the free route it was: since October 2 a new account gets no free pieces, so every message is paid.

Paying elsewhere is not automatically cheaper. SpicyChat and Kindroid both sell several plans, and the plan that matches c.ai+ on memory can cost more. Each app's pricing page lists its tiers with the date they were checked.

If you are under 18, or choosing for someone who is

Every adult-content platform on this page requires users to be at least 18, so none of them is a way around Character AI's under-18 rules. Talkie is filtered but excludes under-16s in its terms and requires a parent's permission from 16 to 18.

For teens, Character AI's own Stories mode is the option the company now offers in place of open-ended chat. Parents weighing any character app should read its safety page first: the policies on training, retention and age checks differ more than the apps' marketing suggests.

Moving your characters

There is no export that carries a Character AI character, its memory or its chat history into another app. What you can move is the writing: a character's description, greeting and example dialogue can be pasted into the creator on Janitor AI, SpicyChat or Chai, which all accept user-written characters. Companions such as Kindroid and Nomi start from a backstory you write, so the same text works as a starting point there.

Expect the character to sound different. Each platform runs its own models, and the same definition produces a different voice on each.
