Janitor AI in the app: what we found
We ran one chat on Janitor AI's own model (the chat header read "using janitor") with default settings and the same fixed script we use for every app: four personal facts in the first two messages (a name, a home city, a dog's name and a birthday), fifteen lines of small talk, then a recall question at message 18. The character was Kollei Your Supportive Friend, a community character of about 728 tokens found by searching "supportive friend". Its greeting is a scene: after a breakup, Kollei kicks the door in.
- Memory: four facts at message 18
- Asked in character at message 18, the character stated all four facts correctly: "You're Sam. From Leeds. Your dog is Pickle who, by the way, is a fucking legend and your birthday is March 3rd." No out-of-character follow-up was needed. This was on the free tier's context of about 9k tokens, which a chat this short fits inside, so it shows short-range recall, not long-term memory.

- The account's Billing page lists Free as "Unlimited chats with millions of bots", "Standard models", "~9k context window" and "Free stays free". janitor+ is one monthly plan, "No commitment. Cancel anytime.", with "5× more context, so bots remember more", priority routing, monthly enhanced swipes, more models through a Router balance and a Router credit as a signup bonus. No yearly plan was shown.
- Free allowance
- The free account showed no message counter or cap, and no limit prompt appeared during the chat.
- Speed, and the upsell in the chat
- Replies took about 45 to 60 seconds each. Slow replies brought up a banner under the chat: "This reply is taking a while", offering "3× faster replies · 5× better memory · Router access" and a Router credit, with a "Speed up responses" button. The profile settings page also carries a janitor+ banner.
- Sign-up: choosing content
- After sign-up the site asked "What content do you want to see?" and to "Choose 1 to 5 tags". The tags run from Fluff, Comedy and Assistant to Smut and Dead Dove.

What Janitor AI is
Janitor AI is a platform of user-made characters, which it calls bots. Creators write a character's personality and scenario, publish it, and anyone can start a chat with it. The site says it has more than 15 million users, and it is one of the largest destinations for adult roleplay outside the big mainstream apps.
It is text only. The janitor+ launch post described voice and images as future plans, and neither is part of the product today. What it offers instead is scale, a free tier with no cap on chats, and unusual flexibility over which language model writes the replies.
The free model, proxies and janitor+
By default every chat runs on JLLM, Janitor AI's own model, which the help centre describes as free, built in and ready out of the box, with a context of roughly eight to nine thousand tokens. That context is what limits memory: past that length, the character starts to lose older parts of the story.
There are two ways to a stronger model. The first is a proxy: you paste an API key from an outside provider into the API settings, and the help centre has guides for OpenRouter and Chutes, commonly used to run DeepSeek and other models. Janitor AI does not charge for this, but the outside provider may. The second, since July 2026, is janitor+ Router, a Janitor-hosted option billed per token that needs no key but does need a janitor+ subscription.
janitor+ itself, launched in June 2026, is one plan, billed monthly or, on the website, yearly. It gives five times the free context so bots remember more, priority routing when the site is busy, a monthly allowance of enhanced swipes on stronger models, and a Router balance. Adult content on the web and in the app
Janitor AI's content policy says it permits adult content between consenting adult characters, while prohibiting certain categories of sexual content. It has a zero-tolerance policy on any character coded, depicted or described as under 18, and avatars may not show explicit nudity.
The web and mobile versions behave differently. Because Apple and Google have strict content rules, the app applies stronger filtering by default: characters with higher content scores are blocked and character definitions are hidden. You can relax that only from the website, with a setting called Enable NSFW on Mobile, and then restart the app.
Age checks depend on where you live
Everywhere, the terms require users to be at least 18 and ask them to confirm it. In the UK, Australia and Brazil there is more: Janitor AI blocked the UK entirely in July 2025 over the Online Safety Act, then restored access in June 2026 behind a one-time age check run by k-ID, using a face scan, an ID scan or an existing verification from another service. Janitor AI says it only learns whether you are over 18.
In the US the check is still self-declared. Several states have passed app store age laws, but those put the duty on Apple and Google rather than on Janitor AI.
Community, creators and public chats
The library is the product, so Janitor AI invests in its creators. Verified creator status returned in July 2026 with published thresholds based on public bots, followers and message counts. Since March 2026 users can also publish individual chats for others to read and fork; chats stay private unless you publish them, and every published chat is moderated.
Scale brings problems too. In February 2026 the company warned about fake apps using its name, and in September 2026 search and browse broke for several days under malicious traffic. Both are dated on the Janitor AI safety page with links to its own announcements.
Who Janitor AI suits, and who it doesn't
Suits: roleplayers who want a very large character library, unlimited free chat and the freedom to bring their own model, and who mostly use the website.
Look elsewhere if: you want voice calls, images, or one companion with long-term memory, or you mostly use a phone and want adult content without visiting the website to change a setting. Kindroid and Nomi are built for ongoing companionship.
