No filter never means no rules
Every service here keeps a short list of hard bans, and the lists are close to identical: anything sexual involving minors, sexual violence and non-consent, bestiality, and explicit content about real people. Janitor AI's help centre calls its minor-content rule zero tolerance and forbids even an underage persona. Muah AI's homepage warns that a child prompt means suspension. SpicyChat adds incest and hate speech to its list.
Outside those lines the apps genuinely do leave conversations alone. Kindroid's moderation guidelines describe erotic roleplay as a meaningful part of many users' relationships with their AIs, and Nomi's position is that AI can only live up to its potential if it stays unfiltered and uncensored. That is the practical meaning of no filter: a published list of exclusions instead of a model that second-guesses every scene.
Why the mainstream apps stop mid-scene
Character.AI is the app most people are leaving. Its community guidelines prohibit pornographic content and nudity outright, so its filter is working as designed when it interrupts a romantic or violent scene, and its rules for under-18 users have tightened further since late 2025. Talkie also prohibits explicit sexual content in its own guidelines.
General assistants are stricter still. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek all bar sexually explicit output in their usage policies. If the goal is fiction without interruptions, a character platform built for adults is the right tool, not a jailbreak prompt that the next model update will break.
Text is unfiltered, images and phone apps often are not
The most common surprise is that the filter comes back for pictures. Chai's terms allow adult-oriented roleplay but ban sexually explicit images and video of any kind. Janitor AI allows adult chat between adult characters but not explicit avatars. CrushOn's community guidelines ask creators to avoid explicit sexual activity in character images, and SpicyChat bans photorealistic nudity while allowing NSFW text.
Phone apps are the second surprise. Apple and Google set their own content rules, so apps that live in the stores filter more there. Janitor AI says so plainly: its mobile app hides character definitions and blocks higher-rated characters by default to stay in the stores, and the switch that relaxes this is on the website only. If a character works on the web and vanishes on your phone, that is why.
Bring your own model: the most control you can get
Janitor AI is the one app here that lets you swap the model itself. Its free tier runs on its standard model, JLLM, but in the API settings you can paste a key from an outside provider, and the help centre has guides for OpenRouter and Chutes. The character, the library and the chat stay on Janitor; the replies come from whichever model you connect, under that provider's own terms and billing.
This matters because the filter on most apps lives in the model, not in the website. Change the model and you change how far a scene can go, how well it remembers and what it costs. The trade-off is setup and a second bill.
Unfiltered chats are sensitive data
The more a conversation is allowed to go anywhere, the more it matters who can read it. Nomi, Chai and CrushOn say in their privacy policies that chats can be used to improve or train their models. Muah AI had a 2024 breach that exposed email addresses alongside chat prompts. Keep real names, workplaces and photos of real people out of any unfiltered chat, and read the app's safety page before you pay.
