When to stay with Chai AI

you enjoy swiping through a huge feed of community characters, you are on Android or still have the iPhone app installed, Chai still offers free access where you live, and adult-oriented text within its written rules is enough. Chai runs its own models, and nothing else on this page has the same feed.

Why people look for a Chai alternative

Five things push people off Chai. The newest is the App Store: Chai's iPhone app was removed on October 22, 2026, so new iPhone users cannot download it, although installed copies keep working. In some countries free chat has gone: Chai's Safety Center says some regions now require a paid subscription, and Australia's eSafety Commissioner reported that Chai restricted free access there. Where it is still free, every message costs pieces from a daily check-in, and ads come with it. Chai's safety systems are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, which disappoints people who used it for adult roleplay. And Chai documents no memory feature, so long stories rely on the model alone.

Work out which of these matters to you before switching. Each alternative below fixes one or two of them, and none fixes all five.

If you are on iPhone

Chai's founder says the iPhone app is unavailable while Chai works on improving it, and gave no return date (our <a href="/news/chai-app-store/">Chai App Store page</a> follows it). Chai's website, chai-ai.com, works in Safari, but Chai says the app and the website are separate platforms with no data sharing, so your app characters and chats do not appear there and it has its own subscription.

Six of the apps on this page were on the US App Store when we checked on October 26, 2026: Character AI, Janitor AI (listed as Janitor: Interactive Stories), Kindroid, Nomi, CrushOn (listed as Crushmash) and Talkie (listed as Talkie Lab). SpicyChat has no iPhone app and runs in Safari, which it suggests adding to your home screen. PolyBuzz, the app closest to Chai's feed, left the App Store a week before Chai did.

If you want adult roleplay, free

Janitor AI is the closest match: a community library on the scale of Chai's, adult content allowed between adult characters, and unlimited free chats on its own model, with the option to connect an outside model. SpicyChat is the other big adult library, free to use with ads and a documented context limit rather than a message cap. Expect age checks. SpicyChat asks for a video selfie or ID before adult content unlocks in a list of countries and US states, and Janitor AI verifies age in Australia, Brazil and the UK. Chai itself relies on self-declaration and app-store ratings, so these sites can feel stricter at sign-up even though they allow more.

If memory is the problem

Kindroid and Nomi are built the other way round from Chai. Instead of millions of bots, you keep one or a few companions, and both document memory systems meant to hold details for months, along with voice calls and generated selfies. Both allow adult content. They suit people who spent most of their Chai time with one favourite character rather than exploring the feed. Kindroid ended its unlimited free tier on October 1, 2026 (<a href="/news/kindroid-free-tier/">what free accounts get now</a>), so expect to pay sooner there.

If you want to stay filtered, or chat by voice

Character AI has the largest library of any app here and keeps unlimited free messaging, with ads and slow mode at busy times. It bans pornographic content outright, so it is a swap for people who used Chai for stories, fan fiction and comfort characters. Talkie and PolyBuzz add voice and image generation and also prohibit sexual content; Talkie is on iPhone and Android, PolyBuzz now on Android and the web only.

Age rules differ between these three. Character AI admits teens but ended open-ended chat for under-18s; Talkie's terms exclude under-16s; PolyBuzz is 18+ only, like Chai.

If Chai stopped being free where you live

Every app on this page has a free tier today, but free access is under the same cost pressure everywhere, and regional rules differ. Before moving a whole collection of characters, check that the new app is free in your country and what age check it asks for there. The alternatives with the most generous published free tiers are Janitor AI and Character AI, both with unlimited messaging on their free models. Moving your characters from Chai

No app on this page imports a Chai character directly, and Chai's app and website do not even share data with each other. What you can move is the writing: copy a character's name, opening message, personality and backstory into the creator on Janitor AI, SpicyChat, CrushOn AI, Character AI or Talkie, all of which accept user-written characters. Kindroid and Nomi start from a backstory you write, so the same text works there.

The character will sound different. Chai runs its own models, and every other app uses different ones, so the same description produces a new voice.
