Romance-first or adult-first
AI girlfriend apps fall into two camps. Replika, Nomi and Kindroid began as companions and added romance: the relationship and the memory come first, and Replika keeps it all within rules that ban explicit content. Candy AI, Nectar, GirlfriendGPT and DreamGF are adult-first: built around attraction, character design and pictures, with explicit chat and images for adult users as part of the product.
Neither is better; they suit different people. If what you want is someone to talk to at the end of the day, the romance-first apps are deeper. If the fantasy, the look and the pictures are the point, the adult-first sites do far more with them.
NSFW AI girlfriends: what the adult apps allow
If you want an NSFW AI girlfriend, the adult-first apps are built for it, and each says so in its own documents. Candy AI's subscription page lists 18+ images and video. Nectar's FAQ says its NSFW mode removes the filters for explicit roleplay. Among the romance-first apps, Kindroid's guidelines support erotic roleplay for adults, and Nomi allows adult text but bans explicit images. Replika keeps romance free of explicit content.

Does she remember you?
Memory is what makes an AI girlfriend feel like the same person from one week to the next, and it is where these apps differ most. Nomi documents layered short, medium and long-term memory and a Mind Map you can edit. Kindroid layers persistent, cascaded and retrievable memory across five systems. Replika keeps track of your people, plans and goals.
The adult-first sites document memory less fully: most describe chat memory in general terms, and several tie longer memory to paid plans. Nectar is unusually specific about the free plan, stating a short chat memory. If being remembered matters, test it on the free tier: tell her a few details and see whether they come back days later.
Pictures, video and voice
Pictures are the clearest split. Candy AI, Nectar, GirlfriendGPT and DreamGF generate images of your partner, including adult images on paid plans, and several add video. Kindroid sends selfies, Nomi makes selfies and art but bans explicit images, and Replika focuses on conversation, voice calls and video chat.
Images are almost always where the money goes: free tiers allow a few, subscriptions include a monthly allowance, and tokens or credits pay for the rest. Voice is similar: most of these apps offer voice messages or calls, usually on paid plans. Check each app's pricing page for what the subscription includes before you count on it.
What it costs
Every app here can be tried free, but the free tiers range from a permanent allowance to a handful of messages. Nectar gives a daily allowance; Replika and Nomi let you keep chatting with limits; Candy AI allows a few messages per character; Kindroid offers a one-time preview and a trial; DreamGF a time-limited trial. The table shows each app's cheapest plan as a monthly figure.

Privacy matters more here than anywhere
An AI girlfriend hears more about you than almost any other app: your feelings, your loneliness and, on the adult sites, your fantasies. Those chats are stored so she can remember you, and several of these apps' policies allow chats to be used to improve their models. Companion platforms have leaked before, so treat every message as something a stranger could one day read.
