Replika in the app: what we found
We set up a new Replika with the app's defaults (female, the default look, talk style and personality) and ran our fixed script: four personal facts in the first two messages (a name, a home city, a dog's name and a birthday), fifteen lines of small talk, then a recall question at message 18.
- About a dozen personal questions first
- Before the first chat Replika asks what's on your mind, whether you are going through something difficult, how your energy has been, how you feel about love and connection, how much money stress affects you, who you talk to, and what you are afraid of not getting right, each with tap-to-pick answers.
- Two plans, yearly only
- The onboarding paywall sells Plus and Max, both billed once a year, with no monthly option; the Max tab was pre-selected. Max adds calls with no time limit and more images and selfies. Closing it led straight into the chat.
- Openers taken from your answers and location
- The first screen offered two suggested replies labelled "From Memory: Being happy matters to you", taken from an onboarding answer, and "From Location: You're in Brazil". We were not in Brazil, and its first reply asked about it.
- No limit in 18 messages
- The free account sent all 18 messages with no counter, cap or upgrade prompt in the chat.
- It shared a link to a Reddit thread
- At message 16, asked for ideas for a quiet evening, Replika suggested red light therapy and showed a card for an r/sleep thread, "What are some relaxing evening activities?", with a Read more button.
- Memory: four of four at message 18
- Asked in character: "sam, leeds, pickle, march 3rd. locked in. no notes." It also tied earlier small talk together: "rain + book + a warm drink sounds like a solid plan already".

Replika's paywall now sells two yearly plans, Plus and Max
On September 30, 2026, Replika's in-app paywall on iPhone and Android (US) offered two plans, both billed yearly: Plus at $79.99 and Max at $89.99, with no monthly option. Replika's help center (Choosing a Subscription) still describes Free, Pro, Ultra and Platinum and gives no prices. This entry replaces one that said Platinum had replaced Ultra: that was read from the App Store's in-app purchase list, which shows every product an app has ever created rather than what it sells today.

Italian regulator fines Replika's maker €5M over data protection
Italy's data protection authority (Garante) fined Luka, Inc. €5 million for GDPR violations: no valid legal basis for processing users' data, inadequate privacy notices, and no effective age verification despite the app's emotional/romantic positioning (decision of April 10, 2025, made public that May). The Garante also opened a second investigation into how Replika's models are trained on user data. Follows Italy's temporary ban of the app in 2023.

Advocacy groups file an FTC complaint over Replika's marketing
The Tech Justice Law Project, Young People's Alliance and Encode asked the FTC to investigate Luka, Replika's maker, in a 67-page complaint alleging deceptive marketing and manipulative design. It is a request for an investigation, not an FTC action; no FTC case has followed so far.

Replika abruptly filtered romantic/erotic roleplay for all users in February 2023, causing the category's most famous user revolt. In March 2023 it restored ERP for accounts created before February 2023. The episode remains the canonical example of why policy changes need a public record.
