Which should you pick?

• Pick Character AI if you want to chat free without a cap: Character AI's free tier has unlimited messaging with ads, while Chai's founder put its free allowance at 70 pieces a day (about 70 messages) on October 6, 2026, and some regions require a subscription.
• Pick Character AI if price matters: both c.ai plans cost less a month than Chai's cheapest route, yearly Ruby (the old yearly Premium price), and Chai's app has no monthly plan at all.
• Pick Character AI if you are on iPhone and do not already have Chai installed: Character AI is on the App Store, while Chai's iPhone app was removed on October 22, 2026 (Chai's website still works in Safari, as a separate product).
• Pick Character AI if you want features Chai does not document: live voice calls, group chats with several characters, and memory tools such as pinned messages and Story Memory.

Free chat

Character AI's free tier allows unlimited messaging, with ads and slow mode at busy times, 15 memory pins and Story Memory, and its help centre says free stays as it is. Chai is free to start, with ads, but every message costs pieces. On October 6, 2026 Chai's founder said every user now gets 70 free pieces a day from the daily check-in, about 70 messages on the standard model, and Chai says a paid plan unlocks endless conversations.

Chai's Safety Center adds that in some regions the service requires a paid subscription, and Australia's eSafety Commissioner reported that Chai had restricted free chat there.

Plans and the price per month

Character AI has two plans. c.ai lite, monthly in the iPhone app and weekly or monthly on Android, cuts ads and slow mode and doubles the pins; c.ai+ removes ads and slow mode entirely, gives the best memory and comes monthly or yearly, with the yearly plan saving about a fifth. Weekly lite costs more than double monthly lite over a month.

Chai's app now offers new plans, at least to some accounts: on October 18, 2026 our US Android account was shown Ruby and Diamond, each weekly or yearly, in place of Premium and Ultra, with no monthly plan and tax on top. Ruby keeps Premium's prices and Diamond costs Ultra's weekly price or a little less yearly, but both come with a weekly allowance of pieces, 900 or 1,800, rather than unlimited messages. Yearly Ruby costs about 40 percent more than yearly c.ai+, and yearly Diamond more than two and a half times as much. Weekly is the costly route: weekly Ruby comes to about $43 a month, more than four times monthly c.ai+.

Chai's website is a separate product with its own Pro plan, weekly or yearly, where paying yearly costs about a third of paying weekly. On top sit a MAX add-on, either a flat monthly fee that doubles the rate limit or billing per 1,000 tokens, and image generation charged per picture. Memory, voice and images

Character AI documents its memory: Story Memory for backstory and key events, pinned messages, and on c.ai+ an automatic Facts system. Chai documents no memory feature in its FAQ, pricing page, store listings or EULA, which is not proof it forgets, only that it makes no promise.

For voice, Character AI has Character Calls, a live two-way conversation. Chai's store listing says its characters have authentic voices, but Chai documents no live calls. Character AI makes in-chat images paid for with Charms; Chai generates images on its web product at a price per image. Only Character AI has group chats.

Adult content

Character AI's Community Guidelines prohibit pornographic content and nudity for every user. Its terms allow sign-ups from 13, or 16 in Europe, and users under 18 have lost open-ended chat.

Chai's EULA restricts the app to adults and says its models allow expansive roleplay in which you may meet or generate adult-oriented content, including mature themes and fictional violence; it bans sexually explicit images and video outright. Chai's Safety Center says its models and real-time safety systems are designed to refuse sexually explicit content, and that users can turn on filters to hide explicit messages. Age on Chai is self-declared, backed by the app stores' 18+ ratings.

iPhone, Android and the bankruptcy

Character AI is on the App Store, Google Play and the web. Chai's iPhone app left the App Store on October 22, 2026; its founder says it is unavailable while Chai works on improving it, and copies already installed keep working. Chai's Android app is still on Google Play, and chai-ai.com works in any browser, but Chai says the app and the website share no data, so a phone subscription or chat history does not carry over.

Character Technologies, the company behind Character AI, filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 to sell itself through the court. The app stays open and paid plans still renew; Character AI says that if no buyer will keep the platform running, it will be wound down. Our Character AI bankruptcy page follows the sale.

Who runs them, privacy and track record

Character AI is run by Character Technologies, Inc. in California. Its privacy policy says chats train its models, with an opt-out only in Europe and the UK, and says it does not sell personal information. It has faced several family lawsuits, suits brought by Kentucky and Pennsylvania, and a fine from Italy's data protection authority.

Chai is run by Chai Research Corp., a Delaware corporation based in Palo Alto. Its privacy policy says your messages may be used to improve the chatbot for all users, describes sharing usage data with advertising partners, and keeps data for up to five years after an account is deleted. In 2026 Australia's eSafety Commissioner found Chai had no robust age assurance and did not direct users to crisis support when self-harm was detected. Character AI's safety page quotes its clauses in full.

Character AI in short
