Character AI and PolyBuzz are the two free character-chat apps people most often weigh against each other, and they look alike: user-made characters, voice, images, a free tier and paid plans on top. The differences are in the plans, the rules and who is behind them. Character AI has two subscriptions and a written, strictly enforced ban on adult content. PolyBuzz has three memberships, several named models and terms that ban sexual content for an 18+ audience while Apple warns its app contains it.

Paid plans

Content rules and age

Character AI's Community Guidelines prohibit pornographic content and nudity for every user, and its filter enforces that. Its terms allow sign-ups from 13, or 16 in Europe, but under-18s lost open-ended chat in late 2025 and now use Stories.

PolyBuzz's terms ban content that depicts sexual acts and say the service is for adults only, prohibited for minors worldwide. Its FAQ describes the rule as a ban on public display of NSFW content, the app's settings include a content filter called Pure Mode, and Apple rates the app 18+ and warns of frequent sexual content, so in practice it is filtered less strictly.
