The verdict
Safe for adults who use the official website or the app published by Janitor AI Inc. The company is based in Delaware, says in its privacy policy that it does not sell personal data, and explains how to delete your account in settings. The gaps are what the policy does not say: whether your chats train JLLM, and whether staff can read unpublished chats. Its dated history shows outages and a moderation error, but no data breach, lawsuit or store removal that we could source.

What the app showed at sign-up and in chat
- Sign-up: choosing content
- After sign-up the site asked "What content do you want to see?" and to "Choose 1 to 5 tags". The tags run from Fluff, Comedy and Assistant to Smut and Dead Dove.
- The NSFW setting
- Privacy and display settings has "Enable NSFW on Mobile", switched off on the new account, which lets the mobile app show NSFW chats "after confirming you are 18+". That page had no NSFW switch for the website itself.
- The AI disclaimer
- Every chat opens with the line "All replies are a work of fiction, generated by AI."

One chat, one character, one day, in a desktop browser through a US VPN, not the mobile app. Two scripted messages went in as one and two small-talk lines were sent twice, so the script was not followed exactly. Screenshots are cropped to the part of the screen described. Source: janitorai.com.

Who runs Janitor AI
The terms of service and privacy policy name JanitorAI Inc., a Delaware company, and the App Store listing's seller matches. The official app is called Janitor: Interactive Stories. In February 2026, before that app launched, Janitor AI warned that fake apps using its name were on the app stores and said its app would only ever be published under Janitor AI Inc., so check the developer name before installing.
What happens to your chats
Chats are private by default. Since March 2026 you can choose to publish a chat for other users to read and fork, and every published chat goes through moderation first. Nothing is public unless you publish it.
The privacy policy says Janitor AI does not sell personal data as defined under California's privacy law, and that data is kept only as long as needed for the purposes in the policy. It does not say whether chat content is used to train JLLM, and nothing in the terms or help centre says whether staff or a bot's creator can read chats you have not published. We record both as unclear.
If you use a proxy, your messages also go to the outside provider you connected, under that provider's own privacy terms.
Deleting your account
The privacy policy gives you the right to request deletion and explains the route: Settings, then Security, then Delete Account, and confirm. If you subscribed to janitor+ in the iOS app, cancel the subscription in your Apple account as well, because deleting a Janitor AI account does not stop a store subscription.
Age checks and adult content
The terms say the platform is only for people aged 18 or over and that anyone younger is prohibited from using it. In the US that is a self-declaration. In the UK, Australia and Brazil, since June 2026, access requires a one-time age check through k-ID, which uses a face scan, an ID scan or an existing verification from another service, and Janitor AI says it receives only a yes or no.
Adult content is allowed between consenting adult characters, and anything involving characters coded as minors is banned under a zero-tolerance policy. The mobile app filters more strictly by default, and adult content there has to be enabled from the website.
