Chai is the app where people chat with AI characters that other users write. Personas are the profiles you write about yourself, so a character knows who it is talking to; Chai's Ruby and Diamond plans list up to 20 of them (Chai pricing). Since the evening of November 3, Chai users have found their personas gone, along with Chai's memory feature. This page sets out what Chai has said, with times in US Eastern.

At 8:23 p.m. on November 3, Chai's founder, Will Beauchamp, posted "Persona & Memory - Update" on Chai's official subreddit:
Sorry guys! There we had a technical problem, we're working on resolving it. Expect Persona & Memory to restored within the next 24-48 hours. We will keep you updated.
That is all Chai has said. It has not said what went wrong, whether every account is affected, or whether chat histories are part of it.

- November 3, about 6:45 p.m.: the first posts on r/ChaiApp ask whether personas have been removed.
- November 3, 8:23 p.m.: the founder's post above. The 24-to-48-hour window runs to between 8:23 p.m. on November 4 and 8:23 p.m. on November 5.
- November 4: the subreddit fills with posts about missing personas and memory. Our change watch counted 181 new posts in the 19 hours to 1 p.m., against a usual two or so an hour, and 40 of their titles mentioned personas. The moderators removed most of them. One user who reposted asked whether chat histories had come back, saying people had been "losing their minds over the missing Personas and chats".
- November 4, 11:42 p.m.: users were still posting that memory and personas were unavailable. The founder had not posted again.
Is this the App Store problem?
No, although the two are getting mixed up. Chai's iPhone app has been off the App Store since October 22, and some of this week's posts ask whether Chai has shut down because they cannot find it there. Personas and memory went missing for people using the app as normal. Android users can still update Chai from Google Play, and the app also runs in a web browser at app.chai-ai.com. Why did my Chai personas disappear?
Because of a fault on Chai's side, not anything you did. On November 3, 2026 at 8:23 p.m. Eastern, Chai's founder posted on r/ChaiApp: "Sorry guys! There we had a technical problem, we're working on resolving it." He named both personas and memory. Reports of missing personas had started about an hour and a half earlier.
When will Chai personas be back?

Are my Chai personas deleted for good?
Chai has not said they are. Its founder wrote that personas and memory will be "restored", which points to the saved ones coming back rather than having to be written again, but he has not said so directly. Chai has given no advice on recreating them in the meantime.
Is Chai shutting down?
No. Chai's founder is posting updates and the app still runs on Android and in a web browser at app.chai-ai.com. Some posts asking whether Chai shut down came from iPhone users who could not find it: its iPhone app has been off the App Store since October 22, 2026, which is a separate issue.
